Mmm, topical, I think the one you're looking for is the song that Bradley Kincaid recorded in 1933 on Bluebird. I haven't heard it in 35 or 40 years but your lyrics ring a big bell with me. It's on the 60s RCA Camden album "Maple on the Hill," and there's a copy of it upstairs but I don't have a working phonograph! I never learned it, and it's not in the little Bradley Kincaid song book that I have, which dates from several years earlier.

This is a Tin Pan Alley hillbilly song, pretty surely, probably written about 1932. It was also cut, on Champion, by a group called the Blue Ridge Girls, a few months before Kincaid did it for Bluebird. I don't see any other immediately recognizable pre-1942 hillbilly recordings.
