Back in the 1980s when we were poor and living in a small town my (now) ex used to hang out in the local mall Waldenbooks and read the passages in various in the books for some hobby or other he needed but couldn't afford. I told him that if Waldenbooks caught on they'd put in a subway-style turnstile and charge him 25 cents every time he entered the store. :)
