Dave, your the colors of the spectrum, according to my seventh-grade science teacher, were VIBGYOR, which has the advantage of giving the correct sequence--violet, indigo, blue, green, yellow, orange, red is the first time I've seen this sequence. I suspect it is unique.

Almost every English-speaking continent I've encountered has ROY G BIV, which is the same as yours but in order of decreasing (rather than increasing) wavelength in the humanly visible part of the spectrum and has the advantage of resembling, memorably, a person's name.
