I use open G6, which is DGDGBE. Basically, drop the lowest two strings a tone. Gives plenty of octaves, fourth and fifth intervals and both a major and minor triad.

I play a sort of hybrid with usually no more than two strings under the slide not damped (plus a bass note open).
