I remember Ian McCalman (of The McCalmans) giving this advice to young hopeful musicians:

"The time to go professional is when you play so many gigs that you have to give up your daytime job."

Or when you start collecting Social Security - or the equivalent in your country. That may be the coward's way out, but it makes sense at my age.
