A sort of update. Well, MediaMonkey definitely does as Bill originally said, it evens out the playback volume, which is all I ever wanted. If you read the instructions (neither do I!) it goes through its library and allocates a (decibal?) correction value, and implements that value on playback. Great. Works well.

The trouble is, with my copy, I can't get CDs ripped into the library, nor can I get it to go and get files from Windows MediaPlayer. I suspect a faulty copy, because the original download wouldn't even work. I'll keep trying.   Chris.
