The boy stood on the burning deck,
His heart was a all a-twitter,
He stood 'till he could stand no more,
And became a crispy critter.

His heroic ashes blown about,
His shipmates all in gloom,
Hailed his courage, one and all,
'Ere breaking out the broom.

And now, collected, in the pan,
Now committed to the jar,
They placed him on the mantle high,
Inside of Paddy's bar.

And, now and then, when back on shore,
They raise their glasses high,
And 'toast' the lad above the fire,
Sayin' "better him than I!"
