There is an ACW song in which an Irish woman complains about her son being "grafted" into the army. First I thought it was an instance of making fun of the Irish mispronouncing things or using the wrong word for something. Now I think maybe it's deeper than that. In the American sense, maybe he was "grafted" because the rich kids were paying for substitutes, leaving the poor to do the fighting.
