I love Sam Smith's beer but I don't often frequent their pubs because of the attitude of the miserable bugger who owns the brewery, Humphrey Smith. It was he who, personally, withdrew the music licences from all his pubs so that 'famous' folk venues like Nellie's in Beverley and The Jolly Sailor in Whitby had to stop all music. I gather from an ex-tenant that he has a habit of visiting his pubs and sacking managers/tenants on the spot. He owns one of the largest independent estates in the country as well as a big stretch of river frontage near Canary Wharf so he doesn't give a stuff about whether his pubs make money or not – so nor do I.
