I understand your point about borrowing a gaelic word, but as several others besides myself have pointed out, "English Country Dance" is not synonymous with "Ceilidh", even in its modern English usage.   Over more than 30 years "ceilidh" has acquired a meaning in England which is rather different from its original Scottish one, and it's probably a bit too late to try to introduce another word now.

Besides, borrowing words (including some from gaelic - take "whisky" for example) is one of the great strengths of the English language - something I should have thought you were in favour of.
