The way I see it, we're all hard-wired to believe in something we cannot see and cannot be empirically proven. That's why people are religious, or dogmatically atheistic, or vote for demagogues, or develop superstitions, or even follow received wisdom on x number of things. Some such forms of belief are more benign than others, of course. But the very fact it's there in us at all points to the truth being out and about, somewhere...and SOMEBODY must know it.
