Some folks my wife knew in her hippie days wanted to let their child choose his own name when he was old enough, but the authorities insisted on a name for the birth certificate. So, they named him "Oil Can, Son of Dan", but never actually used the name. They just called him "Boy" until he got old enough to tell them he wanted to be called "Jason", whereupon they had his name legally changed.
