I agree with you about Lewis, Kevin - I think that was what I was struggling to say.

And if the country is seen as the people, the first verse is OK too. But there is a strand in English political feeling which makes the country something separate - Portillo, sometime before the election was talking about the economy as if it was separate from the people, and more important than them. I have been tending to pick that up in the verse.
