FWIW.
The most recent Gaeilge-English dictionary (i.e. Irish Gaelic) gives three meanings to céilí

1. Friendly call, visit
2. Social evening
3. Irish dancing session

Early dictionaries do not have the third sense which, as Jim Carroll notes from Fintan Valleley, seems to have evolved in London.
