It is widely known in St. Louis (where I grew up) that the ice-cream cone was invented at the World's Fair (a.k.a. The Louisiana Purchase Exposition) in St Louis in 1904. I'm glad to see that Wikipedia supports this, although it points out that several different vendors at that fair claimed to have been the first.
