I forgot about Laplink. Yes, that is a very good solution, extremely simple to use, but I haven't seen it around lately.
On the other hand I am using USB2.x external drives with USB1.1 ports on two computers and they work (although they complain every time I connect them). That may just be the luck of the draw there, your mileage may certainly vary.
