The verse quoted by Shimrod forms part of Trio Threlfall's version, but sung by the man. But having said that I believe Mary Humphreys changed the gender for her version anyway. The general implication of all three versions I know is that they sleep together, which was much more acceptable in the past if they were engaged, but then refuses the final step of marriage. On finding she's pregnant she has second thoughts, but his response is that she's missed her chance. Perhaps still not totally edifying, but not quite as reprehensible.
