I think that this effort has some of the politicians running scared, just as it did when the women of the town started the Library back in 1906. You didn't want to cross them then and you SURE don't want to cross them now!
The women who were at the tea were either movers & shakers in their own right or wives thereof. Dorsey, for instance -- when the Chamber of Commerce decided to move out of Old Town she got pissed, bought a building, and is renting it to them for $100 per year (utilities not included). Dorsey was there. So was Jackie -- she came up to the microphone and said, "I'm Jackie and I'm addicted. To reading."
These are the women who are the iron fists in the velvet gloves, and the "city dads" now find themselves caught between a rock and a hard place, especially since the Mayor his own self told me to do a capital campaign.
So...if you're a member of the City Council, are you going to say, "No, we don't want the bookmobile and things you citizens have raised the money for" and risk being VERY unceremoniously hooted out of office?
"When you've got 'em by the balls their hearts and minds will follow."
