If by "elite" you mean the best of the crop, I am inclined to agree. That's what the word used to mean. But he is very well grounded in the matters of the ordinary life, and is as detached as he needs to be only so far as to avoid getting sucked into the kind of kneejerk reactionary opinionation which so many less-than-thoughtful people engage in in this country.
