How I wish the United States would move Halloween and Thanksgiving into early fall when the weather is nicer and travel is safer.

Once I entertained a band from Scotland on Thanksgiving Day. (a Thursday in late November.) They were staying in a downtown hotel, and didn't realize it was a holiday. They gazed amazed at empty streets and skyscrapers with no one in them and wondered if the aliens had finally come and taken everyone away.

I told them that Christmas might be bigger in commercial terms, but for most American adults, Thanksgiving is the most important holiday of the year. There were nods of agreement all around the table.
