We got that ultimately from the ancient Greek nomenclature for one of their scales, the diatonic genus. They had many other scales, but Western Christian chant didn't use them. There are a lot more note names in Arabic music, which developed more in the ancient Greek spirit.

The Greeks in turn got their music theory from ancient Sumeria, which already had a named 7-note scale nearly 4000 years ago.
