When I first got into folk music somehow or other I heard about John running some group classes at Cecil Sharp House and I went along. This was years before he wrote any tutor books or did his TV. He was a great teacher and a lovely man.

He had a knack of convincing you that stuff that sounded difficult was stuff you could do. And then you found you could actually do it.

Haven't seen him in so many years, but I'm still grateful to him, and always will be.
