I first came across Studs Terkel in a documentary by his friend, fellow journalist and broadcaster James Cameron, when they shared memories of the Democratic Convention in Chicago. I later found his books, read the first one because I remembered his lively and perceptive remarks about those times, and read more because of the way he brought out memories and feelings from people of all walks of life and all points of view, allowing their words to speak for themselves. I was thrilled to be able hear the man himself when he was a guest at Schwarz's bookshop in Milwaukee. The archive of his interviews will continue to be a treasure. A lovely man and a great human being.
