Noreen, my husband and I live in Maine. We do respond with "You're welcome" when we are thanked. We don't have any problem with other friendly, appropriate responses such as some of those mentioned upthread. We are mildly taken aback when such a courteous exchange is replaced by a fevered:

"Thank you"
"No, thank YOU"
"Well thank YOU"
"No really, thank YOU!"
