The metabolism of different sugars is a rather more complicated affair.

Fructose is metabolized through a different pathway and set of enzymes than those of glucose, almost entirely in the liver, to fatty acids and triglycerides (not to glucose) and is not dependent on insulin.

Excessive fructose in the body has its own set of serious problems but they are different to those of elevated glucose. The fructose present in ordinary helpings of fruit is not a problem but excessive consumption of fructose is certainly harmful. Small quantities of fructose can actually have a positive effect in overall carbohydrate metabolism.
