You know what the real problem is? Commercial mass marketing, that's what. You are so right. It is the reason behind the tyranny of the playlist which means that DJs/presenters have little or no control over what is played and are not permitted to exercise their judgment.

One of the reasons that John Peel in the UK was such a good DJ was that he refused to submit to the tyranny of the playlist.

OTOH the tyranny of the playlist is one of the reasons why Mike Harding's folk music programme on R2 (UK) is so unadventurous.
