I grew up in Crowborough, East Sussex, and every year would go Christmas shopping in Tunbridge Wells with my mother. It had three department stores, Marks and Spencers, British Home Stores and Woolworths. Marks and Spencers committed the heinous crime of having NO TOYS. Thus I have a lifelong hatred of M and S which survives until this day - run by bossy looking women who look like they have been on "Songs of Praise" and had those chains danging from the corners of their glasses.

BHS and Woolworths were a cornucopia, a child's paradise - a reminder of a gentler age, which, I fear, will never return, when there were customers rather than "consumers".
