Thread Name: Oh My God, That's Dreadful!!!
Subject: RE: Oh My God, That's Dreadful!!!
Just for the record, the disc I picked up as a part of my three for a fiver supermarket 'deal', wasn't actually by "Celtic Woman", it was some other piece of generic Celtic-u-like splodge with a simlar sounding generic Celtic-u-like title. And neither do I pretend to know anything about real traditional music. I'm still a complete newb. I am however entitled to post a humorously intended thread about something that hurt my ears, and made me grimace. And of course laugh.

As a new person becoming interested in folk, if my only exposure to folk was this kind of mass marketed "Easy Listenin!", I would simply dismiss it out of hand. Just like S Club 7 or Kylie or any other typical toot you might wish to mention.

My tuppney is that these type of recordings are for a type of listener who will never truly desire to learn anything more about traditional music, and that these discs will simply go quietly in the background, to brief complemenatary observances of "this is nice isn't it dear?" and then on the shelf next to last Christmas' Cliff Richard album, ABBA Gold, The Three Tenors box set, and Leslie Garrett goes Pop! (well one can wish) and possibly some Hermans Hermits if your genuinely lucky (I quite like Hermans Hermits truth be known... :-/ ). I'm sure that all this has been said before however, and on far more vitriolic threads than this.

As for Celtic Woman, Enya, The Corrs et al, I wouldn't sweat it for them. They sure won't be. They know full well what they are doing, and as a consequence are of course doing very nicely thankyou!

Re that Corrs clip, sure I'd happily jump about to that, after a beer or two. Unfortuately I can't see those girls now, without Dawn French superimposing herself over their faces....

Now back on topic and On With the Silliness
