If you switch on your active sonar, you can find other things, but you tell everyone else where you are. You should get a clue of anything close by using passive sonar (what used to be called hydrophones) but only if it's making a noise.

These boats are ballistic missile submarines, and they are very much in the business of not being detected. Nice to know it works!
