Genie, I have seen directions for starting roses by putting twigs in the ground. With the roses, we wait till late in fall, when the ground is wet and the sun is getting weak. Thrust several twigs in the ground (because most won't live) and cover them with a glass jar. Put a weight on the jar to keep it in place.

In the spring, see if they have rooted.
