Leather has always been a part of folklore. I grew up in Connecticut, and was introduced to tales of the Leatherman, a fixture in the folk stories of my native state, based on a real historical person. I'm not sure if anyone has celebrated him in song, though my mind vaguely recalls the possibility that Jim Douglas created something about him. If not, he's surely fodder for some modern broadside-ballad writer.--Charlie Baum
