I'm reviving this because of a recent news item. (Montreal)

The McGill University Music Department has been robbed seven (yes seven!!!) times in the last four months! Dozens of instruments were stolen. Almost all the instruments turned up in nearby pawn shops.

So yes, in Montreal, if you purchase an instrument from a pawn shop, the chances of it being stolen are very high.
