Thread Name: Who Is Willie Dunn??
Subject: RE: Who Is Willie Dunn??
Sorry, in error, I posted that before I'd finished.

Willie Dunn - 'Singer, songwriter, musician, playwright, artist, director, award-winning filmmaker, and First Nations ambassador for Canada.' (taken from Willie's main site, in the post above.)

"To many Canadian First Nations, the name "Willie Dunn" is synonymous with contemporary ballads depicting the life and death struggle of the Chiefs of various tribes who led their people through difficult times in the eighteen hundreds.

In the early seventies, Dunn donated proceeds of his second album entitled "Willie Dunn" to the White Roots of Peace in order for them to further their efforts in publishing a journal of Amerindian life, the Akwesasne Notes.

Also during the seventies, he worked with the National Film Board of Canada and directed and co-directed a few films to note, The Ballad of Crowfoot and The Other Side of the Ledger. These two films won nine international awards including three gold medals."

From Willie's film of the same name:
The Ballad of Crowfoot - on Youtube

A grim and shaming story, but also an incredibly informative film, and one which I hope incenses people:
The Other Side of the Ledger - 42 minute video from Willie's film

"A traditional way of life, with traditional problems, hunger and disease...a life of hard work and no luxuries..."

"To many of us the white man's world seems an absurd, frightening and impersonal place where people lose their humanity and nature is destroyed in the name of economic progress....."

"The Indian is an anachronism, a social misfit. If we will not conform, we must suffer the consequences, and the consequences are appalling. Indians are the lowest income earning group in Canada. Three quarters of the Indian families earn less than $2,000 per year. One third of the Indians are totally dependant on Welfare. The infant mortality rate is more than twice the national average. Life expectancy, 36 year, is one of the lowest in the world..." (all three quotes above taken from 'The Other Side of the Ledger')

A song that I can relate to so well:
Hear and read Willie's song 'School Days'

Willie is a man who is being listened to by many, but who needs to be heard by many more, not just people in Canada, but around the world.

I believe the First Nations People will be the ones to bring us all to our senses, to lead the way back, to show us the way. They love Mother Earth whilst so many of us seem hellbent on destroying Her. They have always loved Her, respected Her, known that they are simply a part of Her, that none of us own Her.

WHO is Willie Dunn?
Willie Dunn is a man of Great Wisdom and one to whom we should all be listening.
