I've found there's two ways you kill a thread. One is where you write some would-be clever stuff that you sort of feel is the last word. And it is. But you've no way of knowing whether it really was the last word, and the others are saying "can't top that one" - or whether they have just pissed off down the pub, so to speak, leaving you talking to yourself in an empty room. Sad.

And the other way is where a thread seems to be vanishing away, and you refersh it to keep it in circulation, and nobody picks it up, and you realise you were trying to revive a corpse anyway. Sad also.

Someone's going to kill this thread. Have I just done it now?
