Both the CDC (U. S.) and PHAC (Canada) recommend frequent hand-washing with soap, and both say that the alcohol-based hand cleaners also are effective.
Beware of warnings on media about claims by a "doctor" or "health authority;" they may not be supported by adequate research (doctor on NPR, etc.)
