My late adopted mother was raised in Kansas in the Mennonite Bretheren church, which is not so distantly related to Pennsylvania Dutch, or Amish. Her family spoke a dialect known as "Platdeutcsh" or Low German, which closely resembled Dutch itself, the family having originated in Holland two centuries earlier, prior to relocating to Prussia to escape conscription, among other things.
