In the UK it is thought that one adult in six is functionally illiterate. In schools the time for teaching reading, which is part of the foundation of spelling, has been cut back by the literacy hour. Parents are supposed to hear their children read every night. Fine, but when the parent can't read how is that meant to help the child?All the best
