Don't know what Rigslinger in on about, but union pension funds have been big players for some time in investment. The Ontario Teachers Union held 108 billion in assets at the end of 2007. They own much prime real estate in NYC and elsewhere in the U. S. and Canada, as well as sizeable chunks of several corporations and they are by no means the largest. They were going to take over Bell Canada, but I don't remember how that came out.
