If this is your chance to see the Grand Canyon you need to do it - but it does impact an otherwise spectacular drive - Death Valley up the 395 to Yosemite, then straight across to SF (the extra drive to Tahoe not worth the precious time). SF to LA on the PCH and you're golden. That's what I'd do.
August is a tough time for the Grand Canyon (otherwise I'd recommend Zion two hours or so east, as well.) Here's an air conditioned coach tour, helicopter ride, and twenty minutes on the river at $280 bucks. http://www.lasvegasgrandcanyontour.com/helicopter/grand-canyon-bus-helicopter-boat.htm ??
LA is awesome but not after the trip you'll have had. You won't have the time or energy to absorb the good stuff - just be frustrated by traffic. Maybe cruise along the Mulholland.
