Skip anything north of San Luis Obispo -- the only good things in SoCal are Death Valley, the La Brea Tar Pits, and Amos (in that order). I haven't been to SF for a long time, so any suggestions would be outdated. But the redwoods...yes. The wine country...yes. And the northern coast clear up to the Canadian Border (if you reach it you'll be underwater)...definitely.
