You need to make it out to eastern California, up the 395 through the Owens Valley, up through Bishop and beyond. And make sure to get off the beaten path. Go see the Bristlecone Pine Forest, and Devil's Postpile, and Bodie (old ghost town). Stop in little towns like Independence and Lone Pine.
