On Highway 1, going north, I remember an alarming moment. Going uphill and approaching a sloping right-hand curve I noted that the roadway was mostly covered by liquid clay that looked really slippery. On the left hand side was a drop off.

I hugged the upper side of the road and got by without incident.   

Highway 1 is not designed for the faint-hearted. (This was back in the 60s, by the way.)
