This volume was partly the idea of my old friend, Roger Deakin, who was also the co-founder of Common Ground, who published it, and was also a contributor to the book. Roger, who sadly died in 2006, was one of the best modern writers on the countryside and has been compared to Richard Jefferies and Willam Cobbett.
