I have spade, shovels, pickaxe and mattock. I had assumed the damaged pipe was at surface level since past bodged repairs had been seen.

Burying it a reasonable depth (after testing) would be a good plan to avoid future damage by cows' hooves - which I suspect is likely to have been the original cause of pipe damage.
