Just because the dog was in front of a certain house doesn't mean it lives there. Yes, it ran into the back, but it may have simply been trying to escape the furor. If there was a fence in the back, I'm sure it was capable of jumping it.

My little niece was attacked by a dog once. Owners had tied it outside on a hot day with no water. The police came, gave the owners a serious talking to, and nothing like that ever happened again.

My cat once bit at (rather than bit) a friend while she was petting his head. We checked him and found he had a sore, rather like a boil, in his gum. No doubt the cat thought my friend had hurt him. The vet treated the sore, and the cat returned to his loveable self.
