well John Kanakanaka reminded me of this bit of history I just found out about...I live near Ft. Vancouver and went there with my sister...we were surprised to find that they had a "Kanaka" village nearby in the old days..it was Hawaians..and there is at least one town nearby..Kalama..with a Hawaian name..we asked how did Hawaians get here..thinking they might have just signed on board ships there etc...it turns out the King of Hawaii had some sort of deal with Hudson's Bay where he indentured them for cash...some apparentlyh liked it here enough to stay and so there are Hawaian descendents here...Ft. Vancouver territory stretched all the way to Hawaii..
