'the long sword of morning' is such a poetic image. If the song was inspired by the riddle then the "flocks of white fowl" might also represent clumps of snow hanging on the branches of 'night's dark tree' being melted by 'the long sword of morning'. The song seems loaded with allegorical images. That is what I find so delicious about it.
