I think a metaphor that only goes half way is a mediaphor. At the end of the campaign, a bitter Hillary was heard to say, "I just don't know anymore what's a mediaphor...". A metaphor that never even gets off the ground, such as Ms. Palin's "death panel" is called a noniniphor. This term is derived from the Latin for "Non-starter".
