We had a slow session around here. They had moved on from a workshop at the nearby Arts Center, but still playing from the dots. [...] the effect of playing from the dots was really holding them back.

Which is why beginner session repertoires need to be small, and made up of short and easily memorable tunes. People need to get used to memorizing tunes from the start.
