Goodness, first time I've seen a version with HAIR so grey! It should of course be his coat. This is one of the earliest other versions fo the song I have ever seen Paul, but post-dates the occasion that William Metcalfe sang his version of the song at an event in London, which began the popularisation of the song - although it was the occasion he sang it for the Prince of Wales in 1874 which really made it top of the Victorian pops. More in my paper for a postgraduate history conference at Lancaster University in 2008 (and later revised for a Leeds University conference 'Music and the Spirit of the North' (but please note they've, irritatingly, spelt my name wrong: surname should be Allan NOT Allen).
